In the 1970s, Hopi artist Charles Loloma’s work shook up the world of Southwest Indian Jewelry making. His innovative and creative use of diverse materials and new shapes influenced a generation of jewelry artists. One of the young artists who explored new approaches to jewelry making was Mitchell Calabaza. The influence of Charles Loloma is apparent in this unique Kewa bracelet.

Mitchell Calabaza (1949-) hallmark signatureCalabaza set fossilized ivory and ironwood on a rectangular platform that was fashioned of smooth sterling silver. In between the contrasting light and dark segments of ivory and ironwood, the artist set two small segments of coral and turquoise. The result is an stylish, modern bracelet. The bracelet is stamped on the inside with Calabaza’s hallmark.


Condition: The Southwest Indian Jewelry bracelet is in excellent condition.
