We first posted this man's ring describing the two oblong gemstones as hematite but we have been informed that they are most likely black tourmaline. Not being an expert in either gemstone, we will make our presentation and leave the final decision to the purchaser.

Four small silver drops separate the gemstones which are set in hand crafted scalloped bezels. The face was placed on a solid shank with a fan-shaped appliqué on either side. The appliqué was carefully incised. The ring is unsigned and dates to the last quarter of the twentieth century.

Hematite is an iron oxide mineral (Fe203) found throughout the world. It is the most commonly mined ore of iron. Tourmaline is not a single mineral, but a group of minerals with an identical crystal lattice. Each member of the tourmaline group has its own chemical formula, due to small differences in their elemental distribution. Tourmaline is mined in many countries, including the United States.

Whether the gemstones in this ring are hematite or black tourmaline is unimportant. The effect of the parallel placement of the gemstones on a silver background is stunning and their dark black, with a green tint, is the perfect complement for sterling silver.

The shiny dark silver luster of these polished gemstones is suggestive of the gunmetal finish found in fine pieces of Maria Martinez's pottery. This is an unintended effect but an interesting one to consider.
