The artist encountered this native of San Felipe Pueblo and was so enthralled with his facial features that she asked him to pose for her. This painting of him was a study for a larger one she intended to paint. In this image he is featured in traditional clothing of the Blackfeet Indians.  The artist painted him en plein air as he was dressed in buckskin and holding a beautiful, beaded pipe bag.

The clothing of the Blackfeet Indians is so exotic when compared with that of the Pueblo Indians of which we are so familiar.  From top to bottom, we are mesmerized by the colorful feathers in his hair, the buckskin cape wrapped over his shoulders, the many strands of beads around his neck, and the exquisite beaded pipe bag in his hands.  The red loincloth and blue legging add brilliant color to the pale tan of the buckskin.

Roseta Santiago did a masterful job of detail and color in this 7-½” x 7-½” painting. It is warm, powerful, and exquisite.  It was painted in 2010.

Condition: very good condition

Provenance: this Oil Painting Study from San Felipe Pueblo is from the collection of a gentleman from Santa Fe
