Agate is a stone composed of silicates that is most often found around volcanoes. It is surprising it was not used more often in Navajo jewelry as it seems to mimic the red and brown landscapes of the Four Corners area of the Navajo Reservation. Within the large rectangle of this stone dozens of shades of red, yellow, grey brown and white swirl around, reminiscent of the colors of the Dinétah, or Navajo homeland.

A skilled Diné silversmith carefully framed the stone in an elegant setting containing rippled filing and deep stamping that accentuate the brilliant colors of the stone. The stone rests on a split shank that has been stamped with oval designs. It is one of the most amazing pieces of agate we have seen. Every time you look at the stone, you seem to see something different. It is unsigned and was made in the mid-20th Century.

Condition: The Silver Bracelet with Large Square Agate Setting is in excellent condition. The stone is perfect and the silver has no cracks.

Provenance: The bracelet comes from an extensive Southwest Indian Jewelry collection in Colorado

Note: when we say Diné, as opposed to Navaho or Navajo, we are referring to the people and not the government.  Since 1969, their government refers to itself as the Navajo Nation.
