High grade blue spiderweb turquoise has been set in an elegant modernist frame by master craftsman Julian Lovato of Kewa Pueblo. The focal point of the pendant is an elongated oval cabochon of turquoise with a deep black matrix that complements the light blue turquoise gemstone. Lovato, one of the finest silversmiths of the twentieth century, set the turquoise carefully in a handmade bezel. The setting rests on a silver frame consisting of engraved lines radiating out from the center. Julian Lovato was able to mix both the traditional and modern with a simple elegance that is distinctly his own.

Julian Lovato began making jewelry as a child by helping his parents. He came to know and love turquoise, and this love is reflected in the care and precision he took in choosing only the finest turquoise for his pieces.

Julian Lovato (1922-2018) artist signature and hallmark. He began working for Frank Patania at the Thunderbird Studio in Santa Fe after World War II. Patania’s studio was known for hiring only the most skilled silversmiths where they created elegant modern designs influenced by Native American tradition.  His attention to detail and his creative spirit gave his work a distinctive look that won numerous awards.  When Patania passed away he bequeathed his thunderbird hallmark to Julian Lovato. This piece is stamped J. LOVATO STERLING IHM with the Thunderbird logo.  IHM stands for Indian Hand Made.

The collector of this piece kept meticulous records. He recorded each piece he bought and when he bought it. This Julian Lovato pendant was purchased in 1988.
