When Jan Loco learned as an adult she was adopted, she began a search to find her roots. Aided by Apache artist Allan Houser she discovered Warm Springs Apache warrior Chief Loco was her great-grandfather. Inspired by her ancestors, her work contains images from her Apache heritage, motifs reflecting the heavens, plants and animals and Apache myth and legend.
Using only hand tools, never electric tools, Jan Loco created this whimsical little rattlesnake. She carefully cut the silver with hand shears, then stamped the snake’s eye, and using a file incised the rattles at the end of the creatures tail. She named her piece simply “Rattler” and signed her name on the back. Jan Loco was most active in the 1990s and has not produced much jewelry lately. We are quite fortunate to have acquired this piece.
