Beatien Yazz, Navajo Nation Painter

A childhood on the Navajo Reservation gave Beatien Yazz an appreciation for the nature surrounding him, and he became a keen observer of animals. He transferred visual snapshots into marvelous works of art on paper. The vastness of the reservation and its sparsely populated land afforded the animals there a life free from interruption by man. This gave Yazz great subject matter from which to pull and the result is beautiful contemplative works such as this.

An excellent complement to our recent acquisition of a similar piece (see item #C2989P), this painting depicts an adult Appaloosa horse and foal. It is a wonderful example of how Beatien Yazz's work progressed with time. Early in his life, the artist focused little on background subject matter, but here one can see how he began to introduce naturalistic elements like the desert landscape and plant life into his work. This piece was likely painted in the 1960s.

Condition: The overall condition of this painting is excellent except for a 3" wide crease in the upper left hand corner, which can easily be matted out. It has never been framed and is currently shrink-wrapped for protection. The signature in the lower right is "Beatian Yazz," one of the various ways the artist signed his work.

Provenance: From the collection of the family of Balcomb's Ranch Gallery, Colorado.
