Very few master potters of the 19th century are known by name but two sisters from Santo Domingo Pueblo escaped anonymity because they experimented with creating a new way to design their already exquisite wares. Around 1910 they abandoned the traditional pueblo design style and developed several stunning designs.

The plant-like element sprouting up and around the body of this jar is one of their new designs. Notice how all these elements are connected with continuous black paint. Also, the double band around the neck with cloud-like elements on the upper and sinusoidal elements on the lower is unique to their vessels and is a design they used on most of their black-on-cream pieces.
