This is an early San Ildefonso Pueblo Black-on-black typology jar made by Maria Martinez and decorated and fired by Julian Martinez. It is signed Marie + Julian, a signature used by them between 1925 and 1943.
This is an excellent example of a Black-on-black jar by Maria and Julian. It was constructed in the traditional pueblo manner of coiling and stone polishing, then designed and painted with a clay slip and fired in a reduction firing. The rounded lower body is only stone polished, and the incurving upper body is decorated with geometric cloud elements.
The previous owner purchased this in the 1930s on a trip to New Mexico. It has been in her possession continuously until now.
