Black-on-white Checkerboard Jar [R]

This small jar is typical of those made by Lucy Lewis in the 1960s to sell to those collectors who so desperately wanted a piece of her pottery but could not afford larger pieces.

The upper half of the jar has a truncated shape on which she applied a checkerboard design incorporating fine line elements. The lower portion of the jar is round and slipped only in white clay.

This piece was very well made and decorated and it is in excellent condition. It is signed Lucy M. Lewis.
