Three of the most prominent Latin American artists of the 20th century were Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, and Francisco Zuñiga. These three artists are considered to be the greatest Mexican artists of the period.
Zuñiga was born and raised in Costa Rica but at the age of 23 moved to Mexico and established his reputation painting Mexican women. He became a naturalized Mexican citizen in 1986.
Zuñiga bronzes were cast at Taller de Fundicion Artistica y Estatuaria in Mexico City. The foundry has been in business for over 80 years. During the twenty years that Zuñiga worked with the foundry, it was operated by Luis del Aguita E., the son of the original founder. Del Aguita, in addition to operating the foundry, is himself an artist.
This bronze of a “woman and child” was sculpted and cast by del Aguita. It is very much in the style of Zuñiga’s works and shows the sincere appreciation of Zuñiga by del Aguita as well as the immense influence of working with Zuñiga for 20 years.
