Made circa 1920, this vessel exhibits the classic traits of late Santo Domingo Polychrome. The neck interior is red-slipped, with a black rim top. The under body is stone-polished bare paste with remnants of a rag-wiped red band. The cream/off-white base is rag-wiped bentonite slip with black vegetal designs, all of which are broken with one vertically oriented ceremonial break.
The neck design appears to be pairs of feathers executed in black with white squares in their centers. The body design is a horizontal “tulip design” seen on many traditional Santo Domingo jars and bowls.
This small jar is in very good condition. There is one small rim chip of insignificant proportion.
