Louis Naranjo, Cochiti Pueblo Potter

Louis Naranjo was an exceptional potter. He specialized in making figurative pottery. His figurines are easily recognizable. He was recognized as one of the most creative artisans in the art of making figurine pottery. He was talented and humorous, and both traits show up in his work. It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to re-sell some of his pottery figurines.

Louis once explained why he began making bear storytellers. He was hunting one day and came across a female bear with two cubs. He watched the cubs playing and their antics inspired him to create the bear figurines. In this one, the cubs sit in a rather formal pose on the adult bear’s shoulders with their front paws touching their stomach section.

The figurine is signed Louis Naranjo Cochiti N.M. but is not dated. I believe it was probably made in the 1980-1987 period when Virginia was recuperating from a fall and unable to work. It’s a charming figurine and in original excellent condition.
