An intriguing columnar form in two sections, a tall column with tapered base, paired with a larger tapered base below. Wheel-thrown with hollow interior and cut with a potters knife to create the base/lid distinction, the handle thrown simultaneously.
Lovely glazing techniques highlight the form, with a high-gloss metallic glaze to the interior and handle, a combination of colored oxides in variegated blue-green, purple, and orange-red activate the base exterior.
It appears that the long gold-leaf column has been broken and glued. There are a couple of minute chips on the rim of the base. Signed Dillingham 71 (see right).
Condition: The gold-leaf handle has been broken and professionally repaired. The hollow handle has had a wood dowel inserted to prevent future potential damage. There is some minor loss of paint at the point where the lid joins the base.
Provenance: from the personal collection of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hooten who owned a gallery in Albuquerque Old Town in the 1960s and 1970s named The Painted Parrot, and they were the local representatives of Rick Dillingham while he attended the University of New Mexico.
