Beatien Yazz, Navajo Nation Painter

It is not obvious that Yazz painted night scenes very often; probably less than 10% of his paintings are night scenes. This one illustrates how well he could produce a night scene, however. He painted it on black paper and illustrated all the landscape items in dark colors, both of which provoke a feeling of night.

The main object of the painting is the Navajo man sleeping by the fire using his saddle for a head rest. For this night scene, he used subdued but beautiful colors in the blue/purple spectrum. The yellow hat and red flames complete the color ensemble. Note his horse high up on the hillside.

The painting is beautifully executed and in original excellent condition.

Provenance: This painting is among a collection from the Balcomb family, formerly owners of an art gallery which they closed in 1976.
