Beatien Yazz's attention to detail is most evident in this painting, as is his humor in the manner of picturing the Navajo Yei and small Navajo girl. Yazz has shown the Yei in Levi trousers and cowboy boots, then all other clothing is what one would expect a Yei to wear, that is the kilt, concha belt, fox tail, bag over shoulder and traditional mask. The Levis and boots humanize the otherwise spiritual Yei. The young girl appears to be buying the favor of the Yei by offering fruit. The use of color in this painting is brilliant. Yazz utilized his entire palette in the two figures.
The painting is not framed but is shrink-wrapped for protection. It appears to be in original excellent condition. A companion painting to this one is our item number C3082C.
Provenance: From the personal collection of a member of the Balcomb family, owner of Balcomb's Gallery, at one time located in Arizona, then Taos, Gallup, and Albuquerque, but closed since 1976.
