Beatien Yazz, Navajo Nation Painter

Beatien Yazz was born in 1928 and is one of the few surviving early Diné artists. He began his career with the encouragement of the Lippencotts, the traders at Wide Ruins Trading Post when he was eight years old. He attended the Indian School in Stuart, Nevada where later he was an assistant art instructor. He has painted for most of his adult life having only recently stopped because of declining vision.

Beatien Yazz is best known for his portrayal of the small details of Diné life and culture. This young Diné boy has on his grandfather's hat. His hair is pulled back in the "Tsee yayl" bun of the traditional elders.

The painting is not framed but is shrink-wrapped for protection. It appears to be in original excellent condition.

Provenance: From the personal collection of a member of the Balcomb family, owner of Balcomb's Gallery, at one time located in Arizona, then Taos, Gallup, and Albuquerque, but closed since 1976.
