Koyemsi or Mudhead are probably the most popular and recognized of all Katsina. They appear in almost every ceremony as clowns, drummers, announcers of dances, and other roles.

This Mudhead Katsina doll is a wonderful example of a 1920s or 1930s carving. It is simple in style and nicely painted. The arms are attached to the torso, and the entire doll is carved from cottonwood root. The only attachments are the feathers, which have been changed in accordance with Federal Regulations.
