Collectors and her contemporaries admired Sadie Adams. Dextra Nampeyo, one of today’s finest potters, said of her, “Sadie was a really good potter.” She had a long, successful career making and selling pottery on the Reservation. She supported her family in this manner following the death of her husband. According to her daughter, Lorna Lomakema, her mother took her pottery to Lorenzo Hubbell and asked for a loan so her daughter could go to nursing school. She made pots for Hubbell for years as a payback.
The design appears as a border around the tile and is comprised of bird parts—wings, feathers, etc. The tile is in excellent condition and is signed on verso with the potter’s flower hallmark.
She signed this piece using one of of her flower hallmarks
