Once Known Native American Potter
  • Category: Modern
  • Origin: Jemez Pueblo, Walatowa
  • Medium: Native Materials
  • Size: 5" tall x 4-3/4" diameter
  • Item # C3021D
  • SOLD

In scanning our past history files for Jemez pottery, I have found no other monochromatic design pottery item from Jemez in the past decade in our inventory. Therefore, I do not have any known potter to which to attribute this canteen.

It is a well formed vessel with a flat bottom to facilitate the canteen sitting in an upright position and a flat back to facilitate the canteen sitting flat on its back.

The major design is a beautifully rendered bird executed in red paint. The bird rests on a cloud from which lightning strikes. There are rainclouds as secondary items of design. The rim of the canteen is surrounded by rain clouds.

Condition: The vessel is in excellent structural condition. Some of the base slip and red designs are abraded to some extent, but not to the detriment of the pleasing design.

Provenance: ex coll Colorado collector
