This vessel was formed of native clay with a typical crystalline rock temper. The underbody is stone-polished paste without slip. There is the distinctive large red band with a typically rough polish, striated, soapy-like appearance indicative of a post-1880 date. The interior is rag-wiped red slip and the rim top is black. The rag-wiped bentonite slip is a wonderfully warm cream/off-white color with superb patina.

The vegetal black design motifs are typically Kewa with extreme boldness, a sure mark and fantastic sense of space and design. The large round white circles that appear as the basic design were created by outlining the circles with dense black guaco paint, leaving a negative design. The upper design field around the neck clearly frames and accentuates the upper shoulder, giving a sense of power and subtle aggression to the piece.

The overall emotional feel of the design is that of a strong and powerful element that is accentuated by its existence on a large and masterfully magnificent jar.

There is evidence on the interior that the jar was used for a considerable time for storage. There is exfoliation of the red slip on the interior of the jar and evidence of some conservation of paint on the exterior lower body of the vessel. The jar is truly magnificent and makes a commanding statement on its own.

My first thought on seeing this jar was that it was made by Monica Silva. The rim of the jar is typical of her style and the very dark black paint is as well. Others have suggested that she is probably the maker, as well.
