Special Value Offer: The consignor of this Kewa Pueblo jar has requested that we reduce the price by 25% from the original price of $1700 to a new price of $1275.

Made in the first half of the 20th century, this vessel exhibits the classic traits of late Santo Domingo (Kewa) Polychrome. The neck interior is red-slipped, with a black rim top. The under body is rag-wiped red slipped rather than stone-polished bare paste. The cream/off-white field is rag-wiped bentonite slip with black vegetal designs.

The design field consists of only two major elements—one of which is a bold flower, all executed in black, and the other is a grouping of clouds, also all executed in black. Each of these design elements is repeated twice. There are a few double cloud elements floating around the neck of the jar.

Quite unusual for Kewa Pueblo designs is the lack of framing lines above or below the design plane. The jar is subtly patinated, with one very minor rim chip, but excellent condition overall. This is a simple and beautiful later piece with a warmth and charm all its own.
