This Owl Katsina doll is typical of the post 1945 era carvings. The arms are completely separated from the torso, giving an appearance of movement or action. Real feathers, leather cape, yarn ties and items in the hands are typical additions following World War II.
The doll was carved from cottonwood root and painted with kaolin paint as an undercoat, then decorated with tempera paints. The tempera paint gave way to acrylic paint shortly after this period.
