Original Painting “Autumn Street Scene” by Carl Von Hassler [SOLD]

Carl Von Hassler was fond of painting villages and landscapes of Northern New Mexico. He moved to New Mexico in the early 1920s and established his studio in Albuquerque’s Old Town. For a time, he had been given gratis a room in the Franciscan Hotel in downtown Albuquerque to encourage him to paint in the hotel—it would be good for publicity.

For 47 years, he painted New Mexico scenes and became an Albuquerque legend. Almost everyone living in Albuquerque in the 1920s through the 1960s knew him and had a story they could relate about him.

This is one of Von Hassler’s rare small paintings. Generally he painted in 18 x 24 size or larger, rarely as small as this 9 x 12. The image is most probably a street scene in Santa Fe or other northern New Mexico village. The mountains, probably the Sangre de Cristo, are in the background and the cottonwood trees in the foreground are going through their autumn change of colors. The typical New Mexico small adobe homes with their irregular shaped walls and soft curves are in the foreground.

The soft pastel colors used in this painting by Von Hassler are indicative of the palette resulting from the light of the Sun in the fall. The lack of sharp edges in the painting is reflective of older adobe structures with their irregular walls and soft contours. The feeling one gets when viewing this painting is the peace and quiet of a fall afternoon in a small village.

This is an exceptional painting and it is in excellent condition.
