Robert Draper was born near Chinle, Arizona in 1938. He attended boarding school on the reservation and then the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe. He is best known for his Navajo landscapes. His realistic paintings of the Navajo homeland reflect the reverence the Navajo have for the earth. He seems to be able to capture the beauty of the smallest detail of the landscape.
In this piece a summer thunderstorm has just passed, leaving the blessings of the clouds. Everything is in balance. The majestic red cliffs are a background to the small arroyo that is nourishing life all around it. A small hogan sits on the banks of the arroyo. In the distance, the cloud continues on its way. Draper has captured the subtle beauty of the Navajo reservation.
