Tsihnahjinnie went through many moods in his career, solidifying a style momentarily, and then turning to something new and utterly different. Almost always his subject matter centered about the life of his people. He was always chameleon-like in his ability to change, in his response to new influences.
Originality was surely one of Tsihnahjinnie’s chief characteristics—originality in subject matter and treatment thereof, and in color. His unconventional palette complemented his delightful imagination in ever-new creations. Violent action, sustained motion, or peaceful inertia—he let the brush follow the mood of the moment.
Here, he reflected the peaceful moment of a family returning home at the end of the day. They do not appear to be harried or worried, but happy to be together. The horses are presented with great elegance and color range, and their manes are flowing in the breeze. The overall feel of the piece is tranquility.
It is signed in the lower right corner Tsinajinie. It is undated, but was purchased by the current owner in the early 1970s, so it was probably painted in the 1960s. It is in excellent condition.
Provenance: From a private (Munich) German collection.
