Carl Von Hassler identified the location of this painting as Rociada, NM, Foothills of Sangre de Cristos. The painting is dated 1942 on verso. That date fits well with his schedule of painting in the mountains in northern New Mexico. This painting appears to have been painted during mid-winter near sunset. The Sangre de Cristo mountain range in the background is somber in colors of deep purple and rust red—colors associated with winter. There is a line of evergreen trees, below which is a line of Aspen trees that have not yet shed their brown leaves. The clouds hovering above the mountain range echo the wintry feel.

Von Hassler deftly portrays the feeling of security and warmth in the low adobe buildings in the foreground. No matter how cold and wintry it is outside, the adobe buildings evoke warmth.

Provenance:  Exhibited at the “Santa Fe Tribute to Carl Von Hassler” June 2009 at Adobe Gallery Santa Fe.
