Von Hassler often visited Northern New Mexico villages in winter to capture the beauty of the snow against the simple adobe houses and churches. Perhaps the quiet and solitude of the places in winter appealed to him as there would have been very little outdoor activities going on.

It has often been said that he took artistic liberties when painting a village scene, in that he sometimes might put in a building that was not really there or leave out a building that might clutter his painting, but I do not know if that is really true or not. At any rate, I think it is safe to say that he captured the spirit of Northern New Mexico villages as he did in this small section of the Village of Abiquiu.

It is interesting to note the similarity between the site of this painting and the one entitled “Winter in Abiquiu” (Item #C2896A). The artist obviously set up his easel in the same spot for both paintings. The only significant difference between the buildings in the two paintings is a missing window in the adobe structure on the right.

Von Hassler signed this painting in lower left and described the location on verso as well as dated it 1942. It is in original excellent condition. It was professionally cleaned a few years ago.

Provenance: Exhibited at the “Santa Fe Tribute to Carl Von Hassler” June 2009 at adobe gallery santa fe.
