When Carl Von Hassler moved to New Mexico in 1922, he began a study of every aspect of his new home. He traveled the state observing and painting the people and places that had taken a magical hold on his heart. He believed that to accurately paint a subject, one had to have knowledge of the subject. He was especially fond of the quaint villages of Northern New Mexico. His paintings have a special “feel” that New Mexico can evoke in people. He had the ability to capture the beauty inherent to each individual season.

In this fall scene of a Northern New Mexico village, the yellow cottonwoods explode with color, contrasting with the blues and purples of the adjacent mountains. As a young man, Von Hassler had studied the chemistry of paint while at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in Germany. His knowledge of chemistry aided him in the development of the “secret ingredients” that he used to create the unique colors and textures contained in his paintings. Von Hassler never shared his formulas so his “secret ingredients” continue to remain secret up until today. What is not a secret are the emotions his paintings evoke to those who love the color and majesty of the seasons of New Mexico.
