Polychrome Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan) Revival Jar [SOLD]

This is a magnificent example of a San Juan 1930s Revival pot. It was made by one of the 7 original potters of the revival period at the pueblo in the 1930s. It has a rounded body with the maximum diameter at mid-body and a short neck. The neck and underbody are finished in stone-polished red slip, and the body is a polychrome matte slip featuring four design elements that resemble a face with clouds. The jar is in excellent condition.

Provenance: From the estate of Transcendental artist Florence Pierce of Albuquerque who passed away in 2007 at the age of 89. She was best known for luminescent paintings made of pigmented resins on reflective surfaces. Her interest in abstraction began in the 1930s when she was an associate of the Transcendental Painting Group. The New York Times called her “the doyenne of abstract art in the Southwest” following her art exhibit in New York City in 2006.
