Pueblo Man on his Horse [R]

This is an early example of work by Awa Tsireh, evidenced by the lack of background imagery as well as the lack of ground plane. The detail is indicative of all his work. He was an extremely talented draftsman and particularly adept at detail. This painting was rendered in a style of simple realism.

“By 1917, Alice Corbin Henderson had commissioned the artist to execute paintings for her. Later, Awa Tsireh painted daily with Fred Kabotie and Velino Shije Herrera (qq.v.) at the School of American Research”.
