Santo Domingo Pueblo artisans have been known for decades for the fine work with sea shells when fashioning jewelry. They have made shell hieshe necklaces for a thousand years. It is a style they have made for their own use, long before they started into silverwork. They also fashioned shells into earrings. This pair is an excellent example of such a style. They can be worn with either side facing outward. One side is a beautiful brick red of the outer shell and the other side is the luminescence of the inside of the shell. This is an exquisite pair of earrings.
Provenance: From the estate of Transcendental artist Florence Pierce of Albuquerque who passed away in 2007 at the age of 89. She was best known for luminescent paintings made of pigmented resins on reflective surfaces. Her interest in abstraction began in the 1930s when she was an associate of the Transcendental Painting Group. The New York Times called her “the doyenne of abstract art in the Southwest” following her art exhibit in New York City in 2006.
