Cochiti Pueblo has a long history of producing figurative pottery. It reached its prime in the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. There was a strong revival in the early 1970s with the production of storyteller figurines. Some potters at Cochiti expanded beyond storyteller figurines. Seferina Ortiz was one of them.
Here she made a male drummer figurine. Her husband, Guadalupe Ortiz, is a drum maker at Cochiti. Perhaps this is in honor of him. Traditionally, he makes the drums for her figurines. I assume he made this one.
The figurine is signed Seferina Ortiz and dated August 18, 1987. It is in excellent condition.
