Once Known Native American Potter

A small, cup-size jar of Tesuque Polychrome variety. The red rim is solely responsible for this designation. Constructed in traditional coil-formed technique using native clays and temper, this piece exhibits all the traits of the larger variety of vessel, even in its diminutive size.

This little jewel packs a visual wallop. Three distinct design elements have been beautifully fitted to the limited design canvas. The wavy line, around the constrictive neck, is a unique trait of Tesuque. The loop type elements surrounding the vessel body are not attached to the upper or lower framing line. Floating design elements like this are typically Tesuque. A red rim and tan underbody attest to its traditional format. The bottom is flat. Vessels of this sort were made at the request of local residents for use in their homes, or at the request of merchants for sale to tourists. These small pieces were not functional in a pueblo household. Even in small, non-functional vessels of this sort, the Tesuque potter respected tradition. This jar dates to around 1900-1910. One very minor rim chip is the only damage.
