This is a beautiful Black-on-black jar by Maria Martinez (1884-1980) and her son, Popovi Da (1923-1971), featuring the cloud design. Signed on the underside Maria/Popovi. Popovi started working with his mom sometime in the late 1950s and he started dating their pieces in the early 1960s. This piece is not dated, so it is from the time period of late 1950s-early1960s.
Structurally, the jar is in excellent condition. A section of the burnished black just below the design panel appears to have been slightly abraded by rubbing against something.
Provenance: An Albuquerque gentleman, who grew up next to San Ildefonso Pueblo, and was a contemporary and friend of Tony Da, inherited this from his mother, who was friends with and worked for Popovi Da at his San Ildefonso Studio. He assumes that Popovi gave this pot to his mom.
