This large, deep bowl is among the most beautiful pottery ever made at Isleta Pueblo. This plain-ware, referred to as Red-on-tan typology, contained sand as temper, and was produced up until about 1900, when painted Laguna-like pottery became popular and displaced the plain-ware. The red slip painted or wiped on the outside of the rim is a reddish brown or brick color and was the sole item of decoration except for the beautiful array of fire clouds throughout the exterior of the bowl. A few rim chips and a hairline crack are the extent of any damage.
