Older Jicarilla Apache baskets, such as this one, were made for daily use in the Apache household. Rarely were they sold in the early part of the 20th century. This one appears to be from that time period or even earlier.
This basket has had many, many years of use. It has some missing stitches and the design is faded to the point that it is not visible. This is an exceptional piece of ethnographic history.
Provenance: The property of Philip Winship Davis, from the collection of his grandfather, George Parker Winship. This Undecorated Utilitarian Basket was part of the exhibit 1800s Winship Collection show September 7, 2005 until October 7, 2005 presented at adobe gallery Santa fe.
