Paap was born in Germany and worked as an art director for motion pictures in Berlin for two years. After WWI, he spent the next 13 years in Argentina and Brazil. Leaving South America, he moved to Hollywood in 1928 and was active in Southern California through the early 1930s. He then moved to New Mexico where he was associated with the Taos art colony.

Paap is best known for portraits of Native Americans, particularly Taos Pueblo Indian subjects. This portrait of a Taos Pueblo Indian is untitled and the model is unidentified. The painting is signed and dated 1927 in lower right.

The oil painting is framed in an early 20th century hand-carved and gilded frame by the Newcomb-Macklin Company of Chicago, Illinois, one of America’s finest frame makers. The painting and frame are in excellent condition.
