Once Known Native American Potter

Special Value Offer: The consignor of this canteen has agreed to offer it at $487.50 which is a 25% reduction from the original price of $650.

It is sometimes difficult to distinguish Cochiti from Santo Domingo pottery because techniques and materials are the same. It is purported that Santo Domingo does not permit ceremonial designs, such as cloud formations, to be used on secular vessels, and Cochiti has no such restrictions on its potters.

This canteen has a ring of clouds just below the opening and clouds under each of the two handles. Even with the cloud designs, this canteen appears to b from Kewa, not Cochiti Pueblo.

Other than cloud features, the design consists solely of a deer on the front and another one on the opposite side. The canteen is not signed. It is in very good condition with no damage. The beauty of this piece is in its simplicity.

Provenance: From the estate of Transcendental artist Florence Pierce of Albuquerque who passed away in 2007 at the age of 89.
