Although Winship may have collected this bowl at Zuni Pueblo in the late 1800s, it appears to be a Hopi piece.
A six-inch circle in the bottom interior of the bowl shows faint lines of decoration. It is hard to distinguish the design, however. There appears to have been no exterior decoration with the exception of a brown line at the rim.
The bowl is in excellent structural condition. There are some areas of missing slip, but overall it is extraordinary.
Provenance: The property of Philip Winship Davis, from the collection of his grandfather, George Parker Winship.
