This is an excellent example of a late 19th century dough bowl from Zia Pueblo created most probably in the 1880-1890 time period. The rolled out rim and the wide red band below the lower framing lines are indicative of this time period. It is traditional in every sense of the word in that it is coil formed from native clay with the addition of crushed basaltic lava for temper.

The base and underbody are stone-polished bare paste with a wide red band at the top of the undecorated area. The design area is divided into sections—typical of Zia bowls.

This is an extraordinary bowl with an exceptional patina.
