The famous 20th century potter, Lucy Lewis, had five daughters who are also famous potters. They are Ann Lewis Hansen, Emma Lewis Mitchell, Mary Lewis Garcia, Dolores Lewis Garcia and Carmel Lewis Haskaya.
This bowl by Emma Lewis Mitchell is typical of her fine quality work. The bowl was well formed and sanded. The white slip covers the entire outer surface, including the underside. There are four clown-like Mimbres figures encircling the bowl, each wearing a horned serpent headdress that may represent the Water Serpent. There is a Mimbres bowl collected in 1921 from which this design came.
Condition: The bowl is in very good condition with the expected wear pattern of one of this age. It is signed Emma Lewis Acoma and there was a date 8-7 (indistinguishable) which is partially worn off. It was probably made in August of one of the years of the 1970s, probably in time for Santa Fe Indian Market.
Provenance: from the collection of Katherine H. Rust
