Acoma Pueblo Fine-line Olla by Lucy Lewis

25477-pot.jpg + Add to my watchlist
Lucy Lewis 1898-1992
  • Category: Contemporary
  • Origin: Acoma Pueblo
  • Medium: Medium: clay, pigment
  • Size: 5-1/2” tall x 7-1/4” diameter
  • Item # 25477
  • Price: $4,500.00

Those who knew Lucy Lewis, or at least are familiar with her pottery, will recognize this Black-on-white designed jar with the fine-line pattern as one of her personal favorite designs and a favorite of many collectors.  This has to be the most difficult design to execute.  Each line of the design has to be straight and parallel to the adjacent lines and each must end in the appropriate length in order to intersect with the lines in the opposite direction.  Vertical lines intersect with horizontal lines in perfect synchronization.  There could not be a more taxing design to apply.

As is traditional, the jar was constructed of native Acoma clay and hand coiled, then sun-dried and sanded to a smooth surface, after which a white slip was applied to the entire vessel and polished to a high sheen. The design was painted over the slip, and the vessel was then fired.

Condition: The jar is in original excellent condition.

Provenance: From a Santa Fe family

Recommended Reading: Acoma and Laguna Pottery by Rick Dillingham
