C3193B-owl.jpg + Add to my watchlist
Sarah Garcia (b. 1928- )
  • Category: Figurines
  • Origin: Acoma Pueblo
  • Medium: clay, vegetal pigments
  • Size: 7” tall x 4-7/8” diameter
  • Item # C3193B
  • Price: $850.00

Sarah Garcia is a recognized potter from Acoma Pueblo. Both her grandmother and mother were from Laguna Pueblo so one would expect her to be accepted as a Laguna potter; however she is known as being from Acoma which is where she lived and potted. She probably was one of the most prolific potters at the pueblo. She, along with Jessie Garcia, Lucy Lewis, and Marie Z. Chino, was largely responsible for the revival of Anasazi and Tularosa designs on contemporary Acoma wares. Garcia was also proficient in making figurative pottery such as this owl with its bulging eyes. The feathers were painted with vegetal paint and the beak and eyes outlined in orange slip, all applied over a creamy while base slip. Condition: It appears that a fingernail-size spot blew out during firing and was put back into place probably by the artist. Another very small chip occurred on the tip of the tail feather but was put back into place as well. The left tip of the ear broke and has been repaired. All of the repairs were very well executed and are not visible unless one searches diligently for them. Provenance: ex. coll.
