Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Buff-on-red pottery examples by Maria and Popovi Da are much rarer than Black-on-black, primarily because by the time Popovi began helping Maria around 1960, blackware was so popular and in such demand that it was almost useless to make Buff-on-red.  Fortunately, there are some available.  Whether Popovi fired the redware because he wanted to do something different is not known but fortunately there are examples available.

Maria and Popovi Da signaturesThe jar is designed with early symbols of rain, kiva steps, and deer hoofs, a design combination which soon gave way to the Avanyu and Eagle feathers.

Condition: very good condition

Provenance: from the collection of a lady from Oklahoma
