This Cochiti bowl is decorated inside and out. The vessel shape is traditional late 19th century but the bowl is mid-20th century. The rim rolls out gracefully as in 19th century dough bowls. The interior design features a cat in the bottom of the bowl surrounded by a ring of rain clouds. More clouds are suspended from a framing line around the rim. The exterior design consists of triangular black clouds. The underside of the bowl is polished red clay.
It is quite likely that this bowl, unsigned, was a gift from the potter to Katherine H. Rust, as were many of the unsigned pieces in her collection. There is no evidence that the bowl was ever used.
Condition: the bowl is in original excellent condition
Provenance: from the Katherine H. Rust Collection
