Gene Kloss was a Californian by birth and received her education in the state. In the 1920s-1930s she exhibited her art in numerous one-woman exhibits in California. She achieved national fame from these and other exhibits. When she married, she and her husband settled in Taos, New Mexico, and for most of the rest of her life, there they stayed.
When they visited Taos on their honeymoon, Kloss had taken with her the etching press she was using in California so she was ready to produce art from the moment of arrival in Taos. During her lifetime, she produced 600 copper plate etchings, most of which were of New Mexico scenes.
This etching entitled "Hondo Valley Westward" is a scene of the Hondo Valley near Taos. In the foreground is a pitched-roof house snuggled within a pair of Salt Cedar trees and with an automobile parked nearby. In the distance is a traditional flat-roof adobe house. The valley stretches on into the distance. This etching was issued in an edition of 35 and this is number 8 of the edition. It is titled in lower left and signed in lower right. It is matted but not framed.
