This is an exaggerated seed jar shape that was beautifully executed by the potter. The long upper half of the jar is very difficult to construct in this exaggerated form. Only a potter of excellent talent could do so. Priscilla was a third-generation descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. Her mother was Rachel Namingha and her grandmother was Annie Healing. It is no surprise that she learned the difficult techniques of pottery making from such an illustrious family.
The Sikyatki-inspired migration pattern has been applied to this jar. It extends from just below the neck then out to the shoulder and then down to just above the base. It must have been very difficult to continue the pattern with such a severe change in vessel shape from the mid-point.
There is a wonderful interview of Priscilla Nampeyo by Greg Schaaf in his book Hopi-Tewa Pottery 500 Artist Biographies (click here to view details of book). The book may be purchased from Adobe Gallery
