This is an exceptionally fine bowl featuring a white interior slip over which is painted a polychrome stylized avian design of typical Sikyatki influence. The exterior of the bowl is slipped in red clay over which is painted white-outlined black designs. A mixture of Polychrome and Black-on-red typology is not often seen in Hopi pottery.
The potter of this exquisite bowl is Marcia Rickey who is a Hopi from the village of Walpi on First Mesa. Most potters on the Hopi mesas are of Tewa origin and referred to as Hopi-Tewa; however, there are some potters at the village of Walpi on First Mesa who are of Hopi origin.
Rickey was Hopi by birth and she is referred to as Ant Woman. Her hallmark used on pottery is a flying ant.
Collections: The Museum of Northern Arizona has three of her pottery creations dating to the 1950s and 1960s but nothing from a later date. I believe this bowl is one of her later, perhaps 1980 period, bowls as it was very finely painted by a hand with much experience. It is in original condition.
