Alvina Yepa Southwest Indian Pottery Contemporary Jemez Pueblo signature

I must admit that we do not see too many contemporary pottery jars from Jemez Pueblo since we do not normally represent living artists, but if I were to judge Jemez contemporary pottery by this example from Alvina Yepa, I would have to say it has certainly improved in the last 20 years from what would be considered real tourist wares.  This is an exceptional jar.

This is an exceptional jar. The rim and underbody are slipped in red clay and stone polished to a beautiful luster. The area around the rim was then carved, very beautifully, with traditional eagle feathers surrounded by a band of arrowheads. The main body of the vessel is totally filled with an intricate fine line pattern. Yepa has won numerous awards at Indian Market, Gallup Ceremonial, and Heard Museum from 1989 through 2000, including First, Second, and Third place awards. Her work certainly deserves it. Condition: excellent condition overall with very minor abrasions to the painted design at the widest point of the body. Provenance: from the collection of a gentleman in Colorado
